About the Scientific Notation Converter

This converter runs entirely in your browser. It converts a regular number to scientific notation (a×10ⁿ) and back. Both directions are validated: invalid inputs are rejected with a friendly message.

Scientific notation rules

  • Form — A number is written as a × 10ⁿ, where 1 ≤ |a| < 10 (the mantissa) and n is an integer (the exponent).
  • Example — 12345 = 1.2345 × 10⁴; 0.00067 = 6.7 × 10⁻⁴.
  • Exponent sign — Positive exponents move the decimal right (large numbers); negative exponents move it left (small numbers).
  • Zero — Zero is represented as 0 × 10⁰ by convention.

How to use the converter

  1. Pick the card for the direction you need.
  2. Type a number (or mantissa + exponent) into the fields.
  3. Click Convert to see the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between scientific and engineering notation? Engineering notation requires the exponent to be a multiple of 3 (e.g. 12.345×10³), which aligns with SI prefixes. This tool produces standard scientific notation where the mantissa is between 1 and 10.

Can I enter very large or very small numbers? Yes. The converter uses JavaScript's floating-point arithmetic, so it handles values up to about 1.8×10³⁰⁸ and down to about 5×10⁻³²⁴.

How many decimal places are shown? The mantissa is shown with up to 6 significant digits. The reverse conversion shows the full expanded number.
